Tour Overview

This route is located from south east of Mount Kilimanjaro and beginnings with short drive from Moshi town to Marangu gate. This Is the oldest and well-established route with its nickname of Coca-Cola route which derived from the fact of being the only route people sleep in the hut instead of tents as other route. Marangu route is considered as the easiest route on Mount Kilimanjaro due to its gradual slope, although in the real fact should not be considered as the fact of truth and despise the necessary required preparation. This route has its own test of adventure, scenery, and challenge and in contrary to other route, it offers a comfort sleep in the shared mountain hut with solar light and comfortable sponge mattress. The uniqueness of the route is that it is the only route where client will get time to visit Zebra Rocks located close to mawenzi peak. The trek uses the same route for hiking up and down and offer a great view and panoramic vistas. This hike can be climbed in five days, although at Spider Tours and Safaris we recommend a 6 days hike with better acclimatization at Horombo hut with Zebra rock visit. Our success rate is 95% on this route.

Day 1 : Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

Location: Mandara Huts, Marangu Gate

After breakfast, you will be collected from your lodge in Moshi and taken to the Marangu gate. Once the necessary paperwork has been completed, your trek can begin, and you will soon be hiking through the dense rain forest. Alongside the impressive vegetation, you will have the chance to catch a glimpse of some primates as you head to the Mandara Hut. After a well-earned rest, your guide can take you to the Maundi Crater where you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Kenyan interior.

Day 2 : Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

The day begins with an early breakfast. Shortly after you have left Mandara Hut, you will reach the timberline and then enter the heath and moor zone. Approximately 4 – 6 hours later, the Horombo Hut will come into sight, standing at an altitude of 3700 m. From the hut, you will have fantastic views overlooking Mawenzi, Kibo and the wide plain of the Masai steppe.

Day 3 : Horombo Hut – Zebra Rock – Horombo Hut

Today serves as an acclimatization day. This should not be underestimated and greatly improves your chance of success in reaching the summit. After a relaxing breakfast, a 4-hour trek follows to the Zebra Rocks (4020m). The distinctive black and white stripes give the rock formation its name. On your return to Horombo Hut, a warm lunch will be waiting for you. You can relax in the afternoon and regain your strength for the hike the following day.

Day 4 : Horombo Hut – Kibo Camp

Today’s stage is long and tough. The well-built trail passes the “Last Water point” which is followed by the so-called “saddle”. This nearly vegetation less plateau joins the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. Today’s destination is the Kibo Hut that is usually reached in about 5 - 6 hours. Here, you will enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early night, as the night will be short.

Day 5 : Kibo Camp – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Camp

Today is “The Big Day” - the summit stage. You will begin your final ascent around midnight which will be long and strenuous. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb slowly but surely goes upwards. At sunrise, you will reach Gillman’s Point (5681m) – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro – where the sun will slowly start to warm up the land. You will have soon forgotten the cold of the night and after a further hike of 1 - 2 hours, you will reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m. On your return to Kibo Hut, a warm meal awaits you followed by a 1 - 2-hour break before proceeding back down to Horombo Hut.

Day 6 : Horombo Camp – Marangu Gate

The last stage passes through the heath and moor zone to the Mandara Hut (2700m) where a warm lunch is waiting for you. Soon, you will once again pass the tropical rainforest and after a total time of 6 hours trekking, you will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). After saying goodbye to your mountain guides, a short transfer follows to take you back to your hotel in Moshi. Once there, you can take a warm and relaxing shower and celebrate your success in reaching the summit of the Kilimanjaro.

I just got back from climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro with spider tours and safaris. It was a successful climb for all six in our group, and we all were able to reach the summit together. spider tours and safaris clearly cares about all aspects of the trip, and this is most apparent in their excellent communication. From pre-booking until the conclusion of the trip, spider tours and safaris was very communicative and promptly responded to all questions. I never had to wait more than an hour for answers to questions I asked via email.

I did my Mount. Kilimanjaro trek through spider tours and safaris. in the month of August. spider tours and safaris is owned by Mr. brian, who is a great guy to deal with. Always a call or text away he has been very approachable, and has made sure I have been advised right with regard to my Trek, Safari or my last minute purchase of a Tanzanite. Having worked as a porter and guide himself he runs a company that looks after its staff well; and deals honestly with his customers. I highly recommend doing the spider tours and safaris, way if you want to try summiting Kilimanjaro or do the Safaris in Tanzania.

I had a great trekking with spider tours and safaris! The team was very professional and made me feel like a princess on the mountain. The guide, Laraha, made sure I was save all the time and could tell me a lot about the environment. The cook, Mustapha, made the best food I could think of. Diets like vegetarian or gluten free are no problem. Without any problems of high altitude sickness I made it to the summit. It was a magical experience I will never forget!

Myself and thee friends did the 6-day marangu route. We booked the trek a few months in advance -- the owner, brian, was incredibly helpful and organized from Day 1. All details of the trip were coordinated for us, including renting some equipment that we did not want to carry across the Atlantic. The hike itself was outstanding (loved the route!). Our guides (juma and joni) set a great pace, were extremely knowledgeable about the route, and in general great people to be around for 8 days! Additionally, our guides were extremely accommodating as we ended up finishing the hike a day early. The rest of the team was also very friendly, encouraging, and professional. I also need to mention how delicious the food was -- our cook, evance, was quite the talented chef ("stomach fundi"). Overall: wonderful experience, highly recommend, book with this company!!
