Day 1

Location: Split

Accommodation Name: MS Stella Maris

Meals Included: Dinner

Embark in Split

The elegant MS Stella Maris will be waiting to welcome you as you arrive in Split and transfer to the harbour where we stay for the evening.

After a warm welcome from the crew, there's time to settle into your cabins and venture ashore to begin exploring. After your journey, we wouldn't blame you for wanting to stop for a drink in one of the bars facing the twinkling waters of Adriatic. Or if you want to stretch your legs, you could wander the ancient maze of narrow streets and little squares. Only a ten-minute walk away are the palace's golden gates and the gigantic statue of Grgur Ninski – a medieval Croatian bishop. Touch his toe for good luck (not that you'll need it on this holiday).

As the sun begins to set, it'll be time to find your way back to the ship for a delicious welcome dinner on board.

Day 2

Location: Split

Accommodation Name: MS Stella Maris

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Split

This morning, enjoy a walking tour of the famous sights. Any pop culture fans might recognise Emperor Diocletian's palace as the Slave City of Meeren on Game of Thrones, but this huge palace is impressive in its own right. As one of the greatest structures of the Roman Empire, no expense was spared in its construction - the best Italian marble, with columns and sphinxes from Egypt, and today tall medieval buildings still line the streets, buttressed by unmistakably Roman columns. But if you're expecting to see a museum here, you'd be wrong - the complex is a living part of the city. Shops, restaurants, churches, and houses are built into the very fabric of these ancient walls.

Then, you can watch the city fade as we set sail for Šibenik and enjoy lunch on board. Afterwards, relax on deck and take in the vistas sailing along this coastline. We will stop for a first chance to take a refreshing dip in the azure waters.

Šibenik

Later this afternoon, we arrive in Šibenik, a medieval town with not one, but two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. From the fortress at the top of the hill, the city seems to tumble down the hillside towards the sea. On our guided tour, we'll stroll down the marble-slabbed promenade between the huddles of cafes that line the tangled streets until we find the old town. The shady squares and winding streets lead to St James Cathedral - which blends Gothic and Renaissance styles - and a restored Renaissance town hall.

After our tour, there's time at leisure to continue to explore. Near the harbour, you'll see faded awnings advertising pivo and posip - beer and wine. Give in to temptation. With a long tradition of winemaking and viticulture in the Šibenik region, it's the perfect excuse to try lasina or babić wine - both are grown and produced locally.

Included experiences:

Guided tours of Split & Šibenik and swim stop.

Day 3

Location: Zadar

Accommodation Name: MS Stella Maris

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Cruising with swim stop at Murter

Today, we'll get to experience a concept coined by the Dalmatians that has no equivalent in English: fjaka - a lazy mood of complete contentment.

You can start your morning slowly as we cut through the waves on MS Stella Maris. There's time to enjoy a leisurely breakfast and watch views of the coastline glide past. As we reach the small island of Murter, we'll drop anchor in the emerald-green waters for a chance to cool off with a swim stop.

Zadar

Later, from the ship, you'll spot our next destination, Zadar. The magnificent walled city twinkles in the sunshine that's typical of the Adriatic.

On our guided tour, we'll see a captivating mix of ancient Roman ruins, medieval architecture and modern attractions. During time at leisure, linger by the waterfront to hear the rhythmic sounds of the Sea Organ and, as night falls, enjoy the Sun Salutations installation that utilises the sun's rays to create a light show from sunset to sunrise.

Old ivory buildings with gently sloping roofs and deep overhanging eaves give the city an Italian feel. Streets - paved with marble that's been polished with centuries of wear - lead to a Venetian fortress, turned public park, partly hidden by a canopy of trees. Even the modern cafés hide historical secrets - like the 1,000-year-old chapel tucked away at the back of Kavana Lovre. Coffee is another Croatian essential: first thing, mid-morning, after lunch, mid-afternoon, dusk, at midnight, it's always coffee time - so there's plenty of places to stop and watch the world go by.

Dinner tonight is up to you - but if you want a recommendation, try grilled meats or freshly caught fish, rounded off with a glass of maraschino - a local cherry liqueur.

Included experiences:

Swim stop at Murter & guided tour of Zadar.

Day 4

Location: Rab

Accommodation Name: MS Stella Maris

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Cruising with swim stop

After an evening in the Port at Zadar, we'll enjoy a leisurely morning cruising the Croatian coastline. We'll stop en route for a swim in some of the clearest water you'll ever swim in. (If you choose not to swim, don't miss the scenery from the top deck for your first "oh wow" moment of the day).

Rab

During lunch on board, we'll continue our journey to the island of Rab.

Known as a safe anchorage on the Medieval trade route from Venice to Constantinople, Rab's ancient stone buildings, Romanesque architecture and grand Italianate houses are a legacy of Venetian rule. It is one of the busiest islands around Kvarner, gaining popularity after Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson brought the world's press in the summer of '36. Local lore says the pair were granted special permission to skinny-dip in the nearby Kandarola Bay - scandalous in those times. The island's golden beaches are the perfect place to sunbathe or take a dip (although, unlike the Duke, we recommend keeping your bathing suit on).

With an evening here, there's plenty of opportunity to find dinner in one of the restaurants or relax in a bar by the waterfront while watching boats rocking gently.

Top tip: Try one of the stylish seafood restaurants tucked away in the old town, serving the catch of the day - simply fried with white wine, garlic and herbs.

Included experiences:

Swim stop & visit to Rab.

Day 5

Location: Mali Lošinj

Accommodation Name: MS Stella Maris

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Cruising with swim stop

The morning is yours to spend at leisure in the comfort of our first-class vessel as we sail. You can enjoy a delicious lunch on board and a refreshing swim stop (assuming that the sea cooperates, of course) before our next stop.

Mali Lošinj

This charming town with its large natural harbour is nestled on the southern side of the Bay of Lošinj on the island of the same name. Its remoteness - it is only possible to reach in a small plane or, as we do, by ship - explains the lack of crowds. As the more commercial part of the island, it's a great place to shop and people-watch. You could stroll through the eye-catchingly colourful former sea captains' homes, which date back to the 19th century. Throughout the city, architecture lovers will spot the influence of the island's different rulers - including the Venetian Republic and the Austro-Hungarian Empire - all over the charming coastal town.

Some may know Lošinj for the Croatian Apoxyomenos, the restored Greek statue of a young athlete discovered off the coast - which now resides in a museum in Mali Lošinj and is well worth a visit during your time on the island.

Tonight, you're in for a treat with a delightful Captain's Dinner - it's always a guest favourite.

Included experiences:

Swim stop & visit to Mali Lošinj.

Day 6

Location: Pula

Accommodation Name: MS Stella Maris

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Cruising with swim stop

There'll be time to relax this morning as we sail out of Mali Lošinj and scope out the perfect place to anchor for our final swim stop on our way to Pula. Enjoy another lunch on board, before maybe taking to deck with a cup of tea, taking in the views of the coastline.

Pula

Pula comes into view as we reach the tip of the Istrian peninsula - this great vantage point helped protect the bay. Its strategic location is probably why it's had so many foreign rules - from the Romans in 1 BC to the Austro-Hungarians (who still have a foothold here today).

On our guided tour, we'll see the remnants of these great empires. One highlight that's hard to miss is the magnificent amphitheatre with a network of limestone arches that stand three storeys high. It's one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Croatia, and the sixth-largest amphitheatre in the world. With a capacity for over 22,000 spectators, it's bigger than the O2 Arena - although why such a big theatre was built in such a small Roman town remains a mystery. Our Tour Manager swears that if you listen closely, you can hear the echos of the gladiatorial spectacles that used to unfold here.

Architectural shards of history litter the town squeezed between more modern houses and adorning little squares amongst a tangle of streets. We'll also see the Triumphal Arch of the Sergii, built between 29 and 27 BC to honour the Sergii family who fought for Octavian in the Battle of Actium. We'll spend time in the old town's square, with the imposing Temple of Augustus and the town hall with its Renaissance arcade. Other highlights include a historic cathedral and bell tower, interesting little churches and city gates, as well as an archaeological museum with a wealth of Roman exhibits.

After our guided walk here, gain a glimpse into Pula's soul with a stroll down Ria Ulica, the main waterfront street. Traditional yew and cypress trees line one end and, from the other, you can watch your dinner go from sea to table as sea and wind-ravaged fishing boats decant their catch onto the quayside.

The cuisine - a mix of seafood and Italian dishes - pair perfectly with the fruity flavours of a native istarska malvazija white wine. (Of course, you could choose any drink, but why settle for your usual when a delicious local vintner is on offer?).

Included experiences:

Swim stop & guided walking tour of Pula.

Day 7

Location: Brijuni National Park

Accommodation Name: MS Stella Maris

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

Brijuni National Park

A brief early morning sail brings us to Brijuni National Park, an archipelago of 14 islands and inlets surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic.

Sit back and relax as we tour the park on a land train following the coastline past a Venetian citadel and 20th-century farm buildings. Over 100 different types of birds call the national park home, so remember to pack your binoculars for a bit of bird watching.

We'll return to the ship for lunch and savour our last journey on board MS Stella Maris as we navigate to the former Roman town of Poreč, located in the heart of the western coast of Istria.

Poreč

On arrival, we'll take a brief orientation tour followed by time at leisure to explore as you wish. The town's rich history dates back to the prehistoric era, with notable settlements during the Roman times and in the 13th to 18th century while under Venetian rule. As a result, Poreč has history seeping out of every alleyway, including a 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica - known for its beautiful gold mosaic - which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and is well worth a visit.

Included experiences:

Guided tour of Brijuni National Park and orientation tour of Poreč.

Day 8

Location: Poreč

Accommodation Name: Hotel in Venice

Meals Included: Breakfast

Venice

We'll say goodbye to our home for the last seven nights as we disembark MS Stella Maris and board a catamaran from Poreč to Venice.

You may have seen it in pictures, but nothing can prepare you for how beautiful Venice is up close. It has a dreamy, almost magical feel. Around you, tourists and locals alike look up in wonder at the lavish palazzos. Not even the watermarks can deter you from its beauty. But don't waste time wondering how this seemingly floating city still stands after all of these centuries, there's too much to see on our guided tour.

No visit is complete without a trip to St Mark's Square, home to the Campanile Tower and the Basilica - a luxuriously decorated Byzantine structure with a shimmering mosaic-clad façade. We wouldn't be surprised if you come back here later - during time at leisure - to explore further. The 323 steps to the top of Campanile Tower are well worth the effort as you'll be rewarded with spectacular views of the city from just under 100 metres up.

Nearby is Doge's Palace, a spectacular Gothic building once home to the head of state of the Republic of Venice, offering a glimpse into the life of a Venetian official. And, of course, we won't miss a chance to see the iconic Bridge of Sighs with its rather grim history.

Lunch at leisure is a great opportunity to find Venetian dishes in one of the many small restaurants throughout the city. Ask your guide or Tour Manager for the best places to eat for the most authentic cuisine - they'll know the lesser-known spots the locals love.

We check into our hotel for the next two nights, and the rest of the day is yours to continue exploring the city - or enjoy blissful idleness wiling away the hours, spritz in hand, in a café overlooking the canals (this is a no-judgement zone).

Included experience:

Guided walking tour of Venice.

Day 9

Accommodation Name: Hotel in Venice

Meals Included: Breakfast

Venice

Today will be the day to put your research skills to the test and discover Venice for yourself as you spend the entire day at leisure.

For those who love an action-packed itinerary, there's plenty to see and do.

The world-famous Accademia will be a hit for any art enthusiast (or anyone looking to learn).  The gallery features a staggering collection of Venetian masterpieces, including outstanding works by Giovanni Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Rosalba Carriera, and Canaletto. And if you don’t know these artists yet, the Accademia will give you the most atmospheric introduction.

You could take a stroll through the vibrant Jewish Quarter and explore its winding streets and historic buildings, including the Jewish Museum of Venice - which showcases the history and culture of the Jewish community - and five fascinating synagogues.

Looking for souvenirs? You'll find traditional Venetian shops tucked under streets covered with canopies of washing stretched high between crumbling buildings. Or you could join the lively throng of shoppers at the traditional Rialto market and enjoy the sights and smells of the fresh Mediterranean products sold here. The stalls are a treat for the senses with artistic piles of seasonal fruits, vegetables and fish as far as the eye can see - you won't be hungry for long here.

Day 10

Location: Dalmatian Coast

Disembark

After a phenomenal journey up the Dalmatian coast, it's time to say goodbye to your fellow explorers and disembark.

Please bear in mind, there are no facilities onboard for younger guests and children are expected to behave appropriately around other guests and whilst on board the ship.

Holidays are all about having a good time, not worrying over tipping etiquette. There are no compulsory gratuity add-ons with Riviera Travel river cruise – any thank you for excellent service is entirely at your discretion. If you do wish to tip the crew (and it’s worth knowing that tips are shared between staff), consider leaving €5 to €10 per day.

Dietary Requirements

As long as we have been given sufficient notice of any dietary requirements, these can normally be catered for on the ship. Please note requests such as gluten or dairy free may involve limited alternative options depending what ingredients and food items can be sourced locally.

Dress Code

There is no dress code. Our yacht cruises are informal and relaxed, so casual and comfortable clothing is the order of the day. Shorts and beachwear are welcome during the day.Whilst there’s no dress code for the evening, you may choose to opt for more smart/casual attire. Due to limited space in the cabin, we recommend you pack lightly and use a soft case. It is also advisable to bring sturdy walking shoes for sightseeing excursions and we also recommend bringing some clothes for possible cooler evenings (e.g. windbreaker, light jacket or similar).

Drinks Included Onboard

Drinking water is available on all our ships, as well as tea and coffee, during your stay on board. Tea and coffee will be served at breakfast. There will be self service facilities which guests can access during the day.No other beverages are included, but each ship offers a well-stocked bar providing a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks including local specialities for purchase and consumption on board.

Health and Medication Advice

Whilst the travelling schedule on our holidays shall impose no problems for people of any age in normal physical health, we should like to point out that we visit many historical sites and often enjoy walking tours of various places of interest. Some holidays, therefore, may not be suitable for clients of greatly impaired mobility. If you have greatly impaired mobility, then please contact us for further advice. If you have a physical disability or are undergoing medical treatment that may affect your ability to do the tour, and which you have not already informed us about, you must let us know in writing now. For river cruising we will be able to advise you if the ship is equipped to meet your needs. If you do not inform us, the ship’s Captain may refuse passage, or your travel insurance may become invalid.Although you will have obtained travel insurance, please also ensure that you have a valid UK Global Health Insurance Card. As previously with the EHIC, the GHIC entitles you to free or reduced cost emergency medical treatment during a temporary stay in European countries. Please note the GHIC is only valid in the 27 EU countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland are not included).

Luggage

There is no official limit to the amount of luggage on the cruise. You will be subject to the luggage allowance limitations according to your flight and airline. It is recommended to travel fairly light, due to restricted storage space in ship cabins.

Packing Tips

One of the biggest worries for first-time cruisers is what to pack for a river cruise. That’s easy, all you need is casual clothing that is comfortable and suitable for sightseeing and a few items that you can dress up for dinner – though there is no formal dress code at mealtimes. Layers are a good idea, as is a lightweight, water-resistant jacket. And remember to pack sunglasses, sun cream, and a sun hat. Some excursions will involve a visit to a place of worship or religious site where you’ll be expected to dress modestly. Shoulders and knees must be covered, so bring a shawl or light long-sleeved top to wear inside – zip-off trousers are also handy. Pack enough memory cards for your camera. It’s easy to take plenty of photographs while on a river cruise, especially when spectacular landscapes await around every bend and you join outstanding sightseeing tours. Don’t risk not being able to capture an awe-inspiring sight to show family and friends back home, and don’t rely on being able to purchase well-priced back-ups at your destinations. Excursions are unhurried, but if you have any mobility issues check with your tour manager about walking distances and the level of difficulty involved. If you’re following a tour guide and listening to their history lesson, a shooting stick with a seat may prove an invaluable item to have in your luggage.Money TipsHolidays are all about having a good time, not worrying over tipping etiquette. There are no compulsory gratuity add-ons with Riviera Travel river cruise – any thank you for excellent service is entirely at your discretion. If you do wish to tip the crew (and it’s worth knowing that tips are shared between staff), consider leaving €5 to €10 per day. Come prepared. Even if you’re on a European river cruise, not all the countries on your itinerary may accept the euro. For example, our Blue Danube river cruise stops in Budapest, as well as Vienna and Salzburg, so you’ll need Hungarian forints if you’re planning to buy at markets, cafés, and shops that won’t accept credit cards. Don’t expect an ATM or exchange facilities on your cruise ship. Your cruise manager, however, will be able to tell you the nearest place to change currency.Food And Drink TipsDrinks packages on board a river cruise can be good value – but it all depends on how much you wish to drink during lunch and dinner, and whether you’re happy with house wine and draught beer. Before making any commitment, do your sums, and remember that everyone travelling together must purchase the same package. Don’t worry about missing your favourite hot drink while you’re on a river cruise. All of our cabins have facilities for making tea and coffee and are stocked with well-loved brands.

Passengers with Reduced Mobility

We also sometimes use different modes of transport to complete our itinerary which includes though not limited to, boats, trains and jeeps these may also pose a challenge for anyone with reduced mobility.River CruisesOur ships are not adapted for wheelchair access; if you are intending to take a wheelchair with you please contact us.Due to popularity of river cruising when there is more than one ship in port the ships could be moored alongside each other. If our ship happens to be moored away from the landing pier disembarking could involve walking across gang planks and the sun deck of other ships.River cruises operate with a smaller crew than ocean cruises and do not have the crew available to personally attend to passengers with reduced mobility therefore a travelling companion would need to be able to help with any physical needs. The itinerary we include with our river cruises involves shore excursions visiting places with cobbled streets which can be on an incline making navigation of these streets difficult for anyone with reduced mobility.Cruising down the Rhine, Danube or any of the European rivers we offer gives you the opportunity to take in the spectacular scenery and there is a lot to enjoy from the comfort of the ship. If you can’t do many shore excursions, river cruising in Europe can still be very enjoyable and worthwhile, please contact us with any concerns you may have.

This review is for the italian Lake Como trip Aug 1-8 Wow what a trip. Riviera from start to finish were excellent the booking and help line answering questions were very good and clear. The travel booklet you get is laid out that it is simple to read and follow with step by step info from booking in to flights to meeting the guides. Our guide Matt Purse was just the best guide and real credit to Riviera with his knowledge and straight forward approach to running the trips. Matt kept us informed and told us all the sort of info you want to know without going over the top....This chap should teach other reps ..thank you so much. The coaches they use are all clean and well equipped with usb chargers and have aircon. The places chosen to visit were well researched even down to where coaches park or drop you off. The Bernina Express was the highlight for our family and matts photo tip was welcomed. The only down point was the hotel,a little dated and evening meal in main restuarant was a bit of a let down. I think we were lucky with our room on level 7 and with balcony as the walls are very thin and noise travels. We would book again with riviera

Just returned from my first Riviera tour ,Valencia and the orange grove coast for solo travellers an̈d despite challenges due to two public holidays and things closing, it was managed excellently by the tour manager. Would not hesitate to use Riviera again. Pleased to find a replacement after very bad service from Titan in the past.

What a fantastic holiday to Canada on the Rocky Mountaineer & Alaska Cruise. If you are thinking of booking this do it right now. From start to finish everything was great. The hotels, the transport and the cruise. The rep was absolutely fabulous. If you have ‘B’ as your rep you will make a friend. She is so full of knowledge. We went on this trip with strangers and left it as friends.

Thankyou Riviera and all the staff on the William Wordsworth Danube River cruise. My husband and i have just travelled on the Danube to celebrate my husbands 60th and we had such a lovely experience. We were younger than most of the travellers but we met so many lovely people so this wasnt a problem. The staff were so lovely and professional. The service we experienced was so high. The boat was beautiful, the food amazing and the excursions were informative and well managed. I would definately recommend riviera as a company. In fact we are now considering their Japan holiday.

First River Cruise and the first time with Riviera but it won't be the last. The holiday exceeded our expectations. From the reps we spoke to when booking, to the staff and crew on board, they were all very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Everything was well organised and made for a very enjoyable holiday. The boat was very clean, plenty of space in the cabin and on deck and the food was some of the best I have ever tasted. Plenty to see along the Rhine, with castles, towns passing by at a nice sedate pace and watching the other craft using the Rhine. Highly recommend.

We had a wonderful time in a beautiful area. The tour was so well organised and supported by charming and knowledgable Riviera guides. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Really excellent and will definitely book again.

We would go again in a heartbeat

Oh my goodness, what a relief it was to actually get away! Full marks to all at Riviera for keeping us up to date before our trip and for the help so cheerfully and patiently given with the extra admin that Covid brought our way. We felt totally safe with the measures taken on board, thank you very much for this. Without exception, Staff were fantastic and our every need was attended to. The additional Covid testing ran smoothly, organised by our Riviera Reps. The guided tours were most interesting: the guides very knowledgeable and more importantly, interesting to listen to. We loved this trip and would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you again Riviera, you were FAB!

Presently in Croatia staying at Arauana Hotel, supposedly a 4 star property, but wouldn't give it any star rating. Rooms are small and dirty. Wallpaper blistering. Meals served in a shed like lean-to. Food like warm, greasy and always self service. Second holiday with Riviera this year and neither at standard advertised. Have travelled with them previously and everything was fine, but standards have really dropped. Have booked a holiday with them next year and now dreading it. Certainly don't provide the standard advertised. We have never stayed in such a hovel and have visited youngsters in back packers accommodation which was far better than this supposedly 4 star accommodation. There are no indoor bars or lounges only a shed as a so called restaurant. Absolutely disgusting. Won't be boking with them again
