Magical Mexico

26/01/2019

Last night I returned from my Mexico trip with many wonderful memories - thanks so much.

I loved Mexico City. I had a wonderful woman as a guide and she assured that I got a real taste of Mexico. I saw numerous archeological sites, and she was quite knowledgeable about everything. I climbed the pyramid of the sun! We took a metrobus into the city, walked the streets, ate at local foodstops (even once on the highway). Mexico City is amazingly clean and well-organized for such a huge city and the people there seem prosperous and very friendly. One day we traveled well out of the city, so I got to see Cuernavaca and other small towns and villages.

Merida is also huge, but the center of the city is a lovely colonial area stretching for several blocks. It is wonderfully manicured and quite safe (I walked it at night each night) with excellent restaurants. I went to a local street fair one evening which included enjoyable (if loud) music. The guide there was also a fount of information about the ruins. I got to see a lot of Yucatan and some small Mayan villages Of course, seeing Chichen Itza and Uxmal was a thrill.

The driver to Tulum was gracious enough to stop at Coba on the way, and the guide in Tulum was as terrific as the others. I found Tulum extremely crowded and tourist-filled, but I was there to see the ruins and that’s what mattered. I was safely taken to the airport at Cancun. A truly delightful two weeks.

The hotels were fine, but the Conquistador in Merida was excellent.

Only one aside: I don’t know if people look at my passport and see my age, but the guide in Mexico City had trouble keeping up! She was a good sport to climb the monuments with me, but by the 3rd day she was dragging and limping with a bad knee/hip. The guide in Tulum was an active young man, so no problem there. I worry that tour companies see my age and think I am going to be somewhat handicapped - which fortunately so far is not the case.

All in all it was exactly the experience I wanted and I wish to thank you both for your efforts on my behalf. I will definitely be contacting you about my next trip!
...more ...less
