Day 1 - Arrive Baku

Welcome to Baku! Upon arrival, you will be met by your guide and transferred to the hotel. The remainder of the day is yours at leisure.Baku is the perfect combination of Dubai’s megalopolis and Paris’ chicness with a splash of Soviet history poking its head out. Day 2 - Gobustan

Following breakfast, you will visit the Ancient Rock Paintings of Gobustan, which date back between 5,000 and 40,000 years. This UNESCO Heritage Site is one of the major and most ancient museums of rock engravings in the world. The site covers three areas of a plateau of rocky boulders rising out of the semi-desert and boasts an outstanding collection of more than 6,000 rock engravings. The site also features the remains of inhabited caves, settlements, and burials, all reflecting an intensive human use by the inhabitants of the area during the wet period that followed the last Ice Age, from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages.In the afternoon, take a walking tour through Baku’s Old City, including a ride on the funicular to Martyrs’ Alley, where sweeping views of the city unfold. Step back in time at the Shirvanshahs’ Palace, a 15th-century architectural gem known as one of Azerbaijan’s finest treasures. Explore the Maiden Tower, a striking 12th-century landmark, and admire the 11th-century Mohammed’s Mosque. Day 3 - Baku

Today, you will visit the Fire Temple, a 17th-century fortress-like religious site built above a naturalgas vent, once used for ritual sacrifices. Then, head to Yanar Dagh, or “Burning Mountain,” whereflames continuously flicker across the hillside, fuelled by an underground pocket of natural gas—a phenomenon that has burned for centuries.After lunch, explore the Carpet Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of Azerbaijani carpets, showcasing intricate designs and centuries-old weaving traditions. Continue to the Museum of History, where more than 350,000 artifacts trace Azerbaijan’s rich heritage from ancient times to 1920. (B) Overnight – The Merchant Baku or similar

Day 4 – Shamakhi to Lahidj to Gabala

After breakfast, you will depart towards Gabala. Along the way, stop at Juma Mosque, followed by Shirvan Domes, a 15th-century mausoleum and graveyard from the Shirvan Dynasty. Your final stop is Diri-Baba, a unique two-story mausoleum mosque, also dating back to the 15th century. Note: the mausoleum is built into a rock face, and reaching the upper levels requires climbing steep stairs. )Next, travel to the quaint village of Lahidj (also known as Lahij or Lahich), where medieval charm lingers in its stone houses and cobbled streets. A renowned centre for traditional crafts, Lahidj is famous for its skilled copper artisans. Visit local workshops, watch craftsmen at work, and browse for handcrafted souvenirs before continuing to Gabala. Day 5 – Gabala to Sheki

This morning, you will explore Gabala (also known as Qabala), which is a beautiful part of Azerbaijan with a rich and ancient history. Besides visiting the Historical Museum of Gabala, which houses many historic artifacts from the area, you can also see the renowned ruins of the ancient walled city, Chukhur Gabala, which dates back to the 4th century BC. From here, continue to Nij Village and meet the native Udin people, direct descendants of ancient Caucasian AlbaniansLater, you will arrive in Sheki (132km, 2hrs) and visit Sheki Khans’ Palace, a magnificent work of Islamic architecture, known for its stunning frescoes and stained glass, as well as the House of Sheki Khans, famed for its beautiful internal decorations. Please note that no photography is allowed inside Sheki Khan’s Palace. You will also travel to the nearby picturesque mountain village of Kish (Kis) with its beautiful Albanian Church.At the end of the day, you will return to Sheki with a visit to the local bazaar, where there is an amazing display of goods on offer and is a great place to mingle with locals and see how they shop, barter, and banter, as well as gain insight into their rural lifestyles. Day 6 - Sheki to Tblisi

Location: Tbilisi

After breakfast, it’s time to continue your journey to the Azerbaijan-Georgia border (115km, 2hrs), where your Azerbaijani guide and driver will accompany you as far as the entrance to the customs area. Here, they will bid you farewell, and you’ll proceed through border control on your own.Once you exit Azerbaijan, you’ll need to walk about 15-20 minutes through the neutral zone before reaching the Georgian border checkpoint. There, your new Georgian guide and driver will be waiting to welcome you and continue the journey. Please keep in mind, you’ll need to carry your bags through border control for roughly 15-20 minutes.Once in Georgia, visit the beautiful 18th-century town of Sighnaghi, known for its charming old fences, small houses with tiled roofs, and intricately decorated balconies. From here, take in breathtaking views of the Alazani Valley and the Great Caucasus Mountains.For lunch, you will visit a local family, where you will learn about local peasant life. You will see the locals’ gardens and vineyards, and then have lunch with delicious homemade food, wine, and Georgian Chacha – a strong brandy-like spirit (40-60% alcohol). Day 7 - Tbilisi

Today, you’ll set out on a walking tour to explore the lively capital of Georgia, Tbilisi. First, your private vehicle will take you to the starting point, where you’ll set off on a walking tour wandering through the old districts, structured like terraces, and stroll along narrow streets lined with colourful houses, patterned balconies, and striking examples of modern architecture.Begin at Metekhi Church (13th century), which offers magnificent views over old Tbilisi. A walk through the city’s winding streets will lead you to its main landmarks.Afterwards, take a cable car up to the ancient Narikala fortress (4th century) to enjoy the panoramic views of the whole town and then walk down to the historical domed sulphur bath area.Note: The cable car may be closed for maintenance on certain days. If so, walking or a taxi will be the alternative.Finally, visit the Golden Fund of the Historical Museum (closed on Mondays), showcasing treasures that confirm Georgia’s legacy as the legendary Land of the Golden Fleece. Day 8 – Tbilisi to Akhaltsikhe

This morning, drive to Mtskheta, the ancient capital and religious centre of Georgia, dating back 3,000 years. Explore its historical landmarks, including Jvari Church (6th century) and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century), where the Robe of Christ is said to be buried. Both Jvari and Svetitskhoveli are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.Note: Mtskheta is a major pilgrimage site, so it can be crowded, especially on weekends and religious holidays.Next, head to Borjomi Spa Resort, renowned for its famous mineral water, Borjomi. Visit the small park and taste the fresh mineral water straight from the source.Continue to Akhaltsikhe to visit the multicultural fortress complex of Rabath (closed on Mondays). Day 9 - Akhaltsikhe to Vardzia to Kutaisi

Today, you travel to Vardzia, and along the way, visit Khertvisi Fortress (10th century). Continue on to Vardzia, a magnificent cave town from the 12th century and one of the highlights of the trip. It stretches over half a kilometre along the river Mtkvari and has 19 tiers and is used to house around 3,000 caves. The complex also includes dwelling quarters, small hall-type churches, refectories, wine cellars, and pharmacies. There is also a church hewn out of rock with amazing 12th-century frescoes.You will enjoy lunch with a local family and then continue to Kutaisi (228km, 4hr). (B,L) Overnight – Local Hotel (3-star)

Day 10 – Okatse to Becho

In the morning, you will visit a local farmers market and then continue to Okatse Canyon (closed on Mondays), which involves a 2–3-hour pedestrian route passing through Dadiani Historical Forest, a 780 m hanging trail, and ending with a panoramic viewpoint. Here, you can explore Okatse Waterfall, the Dadiani Forest, and the Satsiskvilo River Valley.Afterwards, get ready for the most exciting part of your trip – a journey to Svaneti, the region of the highest mountains and glaciers and the most abiding ancient traditions. Day 11 – Mt Ushba to Mestia

Today, an unforgettable adventure awaits. After breakfast, you will drive to Shikhra village, where your hike to the Ushba Waterfalls begins. The trail first leads through a muddy forest, followed by the roar of the Dolra River, which originates from the Ushba Glacier. As you continue, the first waterfall comes into view—several cascades of water flowing down the mountain slope, creating a breathtaking panorama.From here, you can either head to the base of the large waterfall, where the powerful spray fills the air, or take a higher route for a stunning view of the Dolra River Valley. The total walking time to the first waterfall is approximately 3–4 hours, with an elevation gain of 450m. If you find the hike too challenging, there is a café close to the walking track where you can take a break and relax while the rest of the group finishes.After completing the hike, you will drive to Mestia, where you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a traditional Kubdari and Chvishtari-making experience before enjoying a well-earned dinner.Dinner and overnight at a family hotel in Mestia. Day 12 - Mulakhi-Mestia-Ushguli

Today, you will walk from Mestia to the enchanting village of Mulakhi, following a scenic route through meadows and forested landscapes for around 4 to 5 hours. As you approach, the village’s historic towers come into view, their centuries-old structures shrouded in mystery, giving Mulakhi the appearance of a picturesque drawing. The Svans chose a truly ideal location for this village, nestled in a breathtaking mountain setting.Upon arrival, you will have the chance to savour some of the finest Svanetian cuisine, a well-earned reward after your journey.After our visit, we’ll drive to Ushguli for dinner and an overnight stay at a guesthouse.Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Ushguli, which is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The village is located at 2200m and is the highest continuously inhabited village in Europe. The village is most famous for its abundance of watchtowers, and this is where you get the view of the highest mountain in Georgia – Mt. Shkhara (5068m). Day 13 –Ushguli-Shkhara glacier-Mestia

This morning, you will set out from your guesthouse in Ushguli for a 5-6 hour trek to the base of Georgia’s highest mountain, Shkhara (5,068m), and the Shkhara Glacier, the main source of the Enguri River, which flows through the heart of Svaneti.The route takes you through lush alpine meadows, where you’ll have the chance to admire a stunning variety of wildflowers set against the dramatic backdrop of the towering Caucasus peaks. As you make your way to the glacier at 2,500m, you’ll witness the powerful forces of nature that have shaped thisrugged landscape. After reaching the glacier, you will retrace your steps back to Ushguli before continuing to Mestia (42km, 2hr). (B, PL, D) Overnight – Gistola Hotel or similar

Day 14 – Zugdidi to Kutaisi

Today, you will leave the beautiful Svaneti region and drive back to Zugdidi (220km, 5-6hr). Here you will visit Dadiani’s Palace (closed Mondays), where the culture of the Dadiani Dynasty is on display, and 41,000 museum objects are held. Most of them are unique and invaluable examples of Georgian and foreign art.Afterwards, visit Gelati Cathedral (12th century) – one of the earliest academies in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and then drive to Kutaisi. Overnight – Local Hotel  (3-star)

Day 15 – Gori to Tbilisi

Location: Tbilisi

In the morning, drive to Gori and visit the historical site of Uplistsikhe Cave Town (1st millennium BC). Uplistsikhe is the place where the Great Silk Road used to pass. This is an old and interesting complex with dwelling quarters, wine cellars, bakeries, a three-nave basilica church carved into the rock, and even an antique theatre. There will be a photo stop at Stalin’s house and museum, but you will not be going inside.Afterwards, drive towards Tbilisi. On the way, you will stop to visit a wine cellar in the village of Kaspi, where you will enjoy a guided tour of the winery and taste three wines produced by the traditional Georgian Kvevri method (this method is inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List). Light snacks will be served with the wine. It’s noteworthy that this wine can be found on the list of unique wines of the Ritz Hotel in London. Arrive in Tbilisi. Day 16 – Sadakhlo - Bagratashen borde Crossing to Dilijan

This morning, you’ll head to the Georgian-Armenian border at Bagratashen. Once you’ve cleared passport control, you’ll meet your Armenian guide and driver.Kick off your Armenian adventure as you meet with fellow travellers at the Sadakhlo Border (1.5hr drive).Our journey begins with a scenic drive to the historic Haghpat Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its architectural brilliance and serene surroundings.Next visit to Goshavank Monastery (12th–13th century)(114km, 2hr), a historic complex nestled in a serene valley surrounded by lush forests. Once a major centre of medieval scholarship, the monastery is home to intricately carved khachkars (cross-stones) and well-preserved stone structures that echo its rich past.Arrive in Dilijan, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Armenia,” by early evening. This picturesque town, surrounded by verdant forests and rolling hills, will be our base for the night. Day 17 – Dilijan

Following breakfast at your hotel, you will go to Makaravank, a medieval Armenian monastery located near the village of Achajur. Constructed between the 10th and 13th centuries, the monastery is renowned for its intricate stone carvings.Continue onto the 13th-century Haghartsin Monastery, a stunning example of medieval Armenianarchitecture, nestled in lush forests near Dilijan. This well-preserved complex features St. AstvatsatsinChurch, intricate khachkars, and a remarkable 1248 refectory.Lunch today will be at Armenia Guesthouse, where you’ll participate in a pork BBQ masterclass, learning how to prepare pork the Armenian way! Pork BBQ, a cherished tradition in Armenian culture, involves wrapping the meat in lavash (bread), known as Khorovats – a dish that remains popular today. Whether served with tomatoes, eggplant, and bell peppers baked on skewers over hot coals in the summertime, or enjoyed in any season, Khorovats embodies the flavours of Armenia.Finally, you will end the day with a tour of Sharambeyan Street, a beautifully restored section of Dilijan. Stroll along its cobbled path, where traditional wooden balconies overlook artisan workshops, galleries, and cozy cafés. Day 18 – Sevan to Goris

After breakfast, drive to Lake Sevan, the second largest alpine lake in the world and known as the ‘Emerald of Armenia’. You will visit Sevanavank, a beautiful monastery on the peninsula, once a strategic shelter for Armenian Kings and then continue to Noratus Village to visit Noratus Cemetery, known as the ‘Forest of Khachkars’. ‘Khachkar’ (cross-stone) is a typical monument of Armenian sculpture representing an ornamented stone with a cross in the centre.Continue to the southern town of Goris via Selim Caravanserai, an important trading post on the Great Silk Road that has welcomed travellers along the highway through the mountains of Selim (Sulema). You will then travel to Karahunj (Armenia’s Stonehenge – also known as Carahunge), an ancient observatory from 6,000 B.C. The site is rich with stone settings, burial cists and standing stones, consisting of around 223 stone basalt slabs.Have lunch at a local restaurant before journeying to Zorats Karer (110km 2hr), also known as the Armenian Stonehenge, located 110 kilometres away, which will take approximately 2 hours to reach. Explore this intriguing archaeological site, believed to be an ancient astronomical observatory, and marvel at the arrangement of the massive stones. You will then drive to Goris.Arrive in the picturesque town of Goris, known for its unique rock formations, charming old houses, and stunning natural beauty. Day 19 – Tatev Monastery to Yerevan

Location: Yerevan

You will start your day exploring the complex of Tatev Monastery, which is an architectural masterpiece dating from the 10th century and is often referred to as a ‘monastery built on the edge of nothing’. You will reach the Monastery via the world’s longest aerial tramway called ‘Wings of Tatev’.After lunch, you will visit Noravank Monastery – a great religious and cultural centre of the 12th century, which is located in a seemingly inaccessible location amidst impressive red cliffs and stunning mountains.Finally, you will be driven to the Vayots Dzor region, the agricultural heart of the country, inhabited since the Bronze Age. The region also prides its old wine-making traditions with a history starting from the times of Noah. You will visit Areni Winery for a wine degustation with Armenia’s best wines coming from this region. You will then continue to the capital city of Yerevan (110km, 2hr). Day 20 – Echmiadzin to Zvartnots

Yerevan City Walking Tour – Your day will begin with exploring the vibrant city of Yerevan with your guide. Originally established in 782 BC, Yerevan is a thriving city with the excitement, hustle and bustle of a modern capital.You will start your exploration from Republic Square, the masterpiece of architect Alexander Tamanian, known for its grand neoclassical buildings and central musical fountains. Continue to the Opera House, a stunning architectural gem and the cultural hub of Yerevan, hosting world-class performances. Visit the Cascade Complex, an open-air museum of modern art featuring a massive stairway adorned with sculptures and fountains. This striking complex connects the city’s historic residential and cultural districts with terraced gardens and panoramic views.Stroll along Northern Avenue, a lively pedestrian street lined with shops, cafés, and restaurants.As you return to Yerevan, you will stop at the ruins of Zvartnots – the pearl of 7th-century architecture, inscribed in UNESCO’s World Heritage list.Depart for Echmiadzin, the spiritual centre of all Armenians and the seat of the Armenian Catholicos. Echmiadzin Cathedral is the oldest standing church in Christendom, built in 303 AD over a pagan fire altar. This landmark is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. You will then enjoy lunch at the Tasty Gastro Yard, where you can sample the national food and the traditional Armenian dish ‘Tolma’. Day 21 – Garni to Geghard

After your hotel breakfast, you will depart for Garni Village to visit Garni Temple (39km/1hr), dating back to the 1st century. The citadel and pagan temple of Garni are a picturesque monument of the Hellenistic period and an impressive piece of ancient Armenian architecture. Here you will have an opportunity to enjoy the charming melodies of the Armenian ‘duduk’ by a local performer. Duduk and its music are inscribed in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The architectural peculiarities of the temple were designed in a way to produce an authentically holy and mysterious reverberation of sound, almost a divine echo.Lunch and Lavish Masterclass – Enjoy lunch at a family-run home restaurant, where you’ll experience a traditional lavash baking masterclass. The demonstration takes place in the yard, where a special area has been built around the ‘tonir’, an underground clay oven used for baking this iconic Armenian flatbread.After a good meal, you will visit Geghard Monastery. The spectacular towering cliffs surrounding the monastery are part of the Azat River Gorge and are included together with the monastery in the UNESCO World Heritage Site listing. Some of the chambers within the monastery complex are entirely dug out of the cliff rocks, others are little more than caves, while others are elaborate structures, with both architecturally complex walled sections and rooms deep inside the cliff.
